Part of your intestinal tract is the colon. It removes the final amount of salts and water, which your body uses, from the waste. Further down the colon lives bacteria that break down the waste further until you have the product which you ultimately expel in the bathroom from your body. But sometimes old waste can build up in the pipes, so to speak.

Built-up waste in the colon releases toxins into the body which can cause numerous health problems such as constipation, acne, low energy, colds, arthritis, and much more. Removing the waste is a must to keep your colon and your body working properly.

Do you know what a colon cleanse actually is? When people talk of a colon cleanser, they are usually referring to some sort of pill or substance taken orally to remove the caked waste from the wall of the colon. This is an accurate description, but not the only one. There are generally two types of colon cleansers, ones that are orally taken and ones that involve irrigating the colon. There are also bad and good colon cleansers.

There are herbal cleansers made from plants that are essentially laxatives. Overuse of these types of colon cleansers can damage numerous body systems like the heart and liver and can also cause blood diseases. Also one might be allergic to some of the herbs. It is very important to know all the risks before taking one of these and to consult with your health care provider first.

One type of colon cleansing many people avoid is the enema. An enema consists of a nozzle attached to a bag of fluid being placed in the rectum and the liquid allowed to fill the colon. There are also pre-mixed solutions that are available commercially. This process can only reach the lower part of the colon and thus is not as effective as other methods and it is also painful for some people. Pain and cramps are often associated with this type of treatment. Also, overuse can cause tears in the rectum as well as the intestine.

There are safer methods available than enemas and herbal cleansers that you find in the pharmacy that do not cause or aggravate health problems. One such option is colon hydrotherapy which is similar to an enema and is administered by a colonics professional. With this procedure, liquid is inserted into the intestinal tract using special equipment at a much slower rate than regular enemas. By using this process you can avoid the pain of the enema while also going deeper into the colon to clean it.

Organic colon cleansers are one option for cleansing the colon. One such cleanser, oxygenated magnesium can help clean the colon by bringing oxygen to the colon and breaking up the stuck on waste. All in all, personal research and talking to your family doctor is a must.
