Women suffering with ovarian cyst will need a procedure to have them removed. Your doctor may tell you that your cyst is asymptomatic and will go away after a few menstrual cycles. If you are having problems such as pain, bleeding, or if your cyst is large, twisted, or cancerous you doctor will want to do an ovarian cyst removal. If your an older woman you run the risk of your cyst becoming cancerous if not removed.

There are several risk factors that can cause problems during the removal process. This risk factors include things like; obesity, illness, smoking, and alcohol and drug abuse. Medications that are taken regularly can be a problem too. If you are on insulin, sedatives, or muscle relaxers your doctor will need to know.

Take your time when making a decision to have an ovarian cyst removed. Have a discussion with your doctor about risk and success rates. Find out what you should expect before and after your surgery. If you decide to have the procedure then you should be prepared to have a physical exam, blood test, urine test, and an ultrasound or even an x-ray.

One of the procedures for ovarian cyst removal is laparoscopic surgery. This surgery is fairly simple, your doctor will make a small incision right under your naval and insert a laparoscope through it. He will then pump carbon dioxide gas into your abdomen so that he can see all of the organs better. Once the laparoscope finds the cyst he will then make one ot two more small incisions so he can remove the ovarian cyst.

The second procedure is open surgery. The surgery is the more invasive of the two. The doctor will need to cut your abdomen and muscles open so that your abdomen can be completely opened up. Once that is done the surgeon will locate the blood vessels that feed the cyst. He can then clamp and tie them. Once the surgeon removes the cyst you will be stapled or stitched up.

Recovery time will vary from person to person depending on the surgery. The laparoscopic surgery will only hurt for 2-4 days afterward. But the open surgery can leave you in pain for 7-10 days. You will need to avoid strenuous activity for several weeks along with sexual activity. You should not do any lifting either. Your body needs time to recover from surgery.
