How to take Chromium Supplements the Right Way

As with any vitamin, supplement, or medication, there is a correct way to use a chromium supplement. Since chromium is a natural mineral that plays several vital health roles for your body, it’s important for you to take chromium correctly. To illustrate this concept, consider these facts about chromium: it aids your body in using sugars and metabolizing protein, carbohydrates and fats that you get from the foods you eat. If you’re deficient in the amount of chromium that your body maintains, this could cause harm to your body, especially if you suffer from type 2 diabetes.

There are actually a lot of chromium supplements available in the market today. You can choose to buy the kind that are taken by mouth or if needed, buy the ones that can be injected. Injectable chromium supplements should be given by a licensed medical professional.

Chromium supplements are most often sold as capsules, liquid-capsules, and tablets. If you have difficulty swallowing a “hard” tablet, you may find that the liquid-capsules are much easier to swallow. Along with your supplement, try washing it down with a fruit juice like grape, apple or orange: these juices are high in natural chromium.

- Infant to three years old: 10-80 micrograms (mcgs)
- Four to six years old: 30-120 mcgs
- Seven to ten years old: 50-200 mcgs
-Teenagers and adults: 50-200 mcgs

These RDA amounts are based upon your age, body size, and overall health. For example, pregnant or breastfeeding women need more chromium either through food and/or supplements. In any case, it’s essential that you consult with your physician if you believe you may need a chromium supplement. Occasionally chromium does not interact well with your medications and syndromes like allergies to some foods and/or other substances.

0 to 3 years old: 10 - 80 mcg
4 to 6 years old: 30 - 120 mcg
7 to 10 years old: 50 - 200 mcg
Teenagers and Adults: 50 - 200 mcg

For example, these brands, available locally or online, have a good reputation as being pure and top quality and affordable: Amino-CR, Chromate, Chromocaps, Nia-Chrom, and M2 Chromium.

For your comfort, and especially if you have difficulty swallowing “hard” pills, chromium supplements are available as capsules, liquid-capsules and tablets. Injectable chromium is available, but should be administered only by a health care professional. You can safely use chromium by taking the correct dose in the correct manner, but also remember to eat those foods that contain natural chromium.
