The medical term for the fungal infection that affects both the fingernails and toenails is onychomycosis. While this condition affects both the fingernails and toenails, it is much more common in the toenails. There are some symptoms to watch for that may indicate that a toenail fungus infection is present.

The symptoms that are commonly seen are discolored nails, usually yellow or white, thick or brittle nails, a nail that has lifted from the toe, crumbly nails, or nails that curl either up or down or are distorted in some way. Depending on the severity of the condition, some of the symptoms can be rather painful.

However, studies have shown that the symptoms of toenail fungus infections are most common in people over 60 years of age. Even with so many known symptoms, it can sometimes be difficult to realize that a fungal infection is present. It’s also difficult to determine the exact origins of an infection. Once your doctor confirms that you have a toenail fungus infection, the right medication or treatment plan can be provided.

There are many different remedies and medications that are available to you if you are suffering form a fungus toenail infection. Oral medications are on the market that promote new nail growth actually work by a brand new nail replacing the old infected one. It may be necessary to take these medications anywhere between 6 - 12 weeks for them to successfully cure the ailment.

It is usually advised that those which have a history of liver disorders or heart problems to stay away from these types of medications. Topical treatments such as steroid creams are also available to treat certain types of infection, although using the creams on their own is simply not enough to cure most infections that may arise.

There are several things that can be done to take care of the nails that may help prevent the development of toenail fungus. Use shoes that provide good support for the foot and allow extra room for the toes. Avoid pointed toe shoes at all costs. Choosing socks that are made using 100% cotton and making sure they are clean and dry at all times will greatly reduce the chance of developing an infection.

A final piece of advice that will help keeping your toenails in good conditions is keeping them maintained at a short length. This helps to reduce trauma to the nail from banging against hard objects or the insides of your shoes while walking.
