It’s not at all fun to sleep in the same room with somebody who snores. So imagine if your partner does. I bet it’s never a pleasant sleeping night every night. It is not the same for the one who snores because he or she is sleeping while the snoring occurs, he or she won’t even know.
Although snoring is often the butt of jokes and the topic of funny scenes in television sitcoms, it’s not as amusing in real life. It produces stress in relationships. If you can find a heavy sleeper that doesn’t get bothered with your snoring at night, then good for you. But you don’t pick out your partner by his or her ability to sleep through the noise at night. Your spouse won’t enjoy the lovely day ahead if she didn’t have a good night’s rest.
It’s not a question of whether you sincerely love your snoring partner or not. What matters is that you, as the non-snorer, are being denied of a good and straight sleep at night. It makes you think that your partner is being a little selfish by sleeping peacefully while you lie awake at night, anxious for a sleep.
And while snoring is unintentional, you can do something about it. If you are the snorer, try these measures:
First, lose some weight. This may sound mean but studies show that obesity is a big factor (no pun intended) in snoring. Also, lay off the alcohol and cigarettes. Your muscles can loosen more without alcohols. And as for smoking, it increases overcrowding in your throat, lungs, and nasal passages, thus barring the smooth flow of air.
Another option is to try donning chin straps. The device holds your mouth shut so you are forced to breathe through your nose while you sleep. There are also snorers who tried hypnosis, but not everybody can ascertain its efficiency.
Before buying any new gadgets, it is still best to see an ENT specialist first. Doctors specializing in ear, nose, and throat can help ascertain where your snoring is coming from. You may have enlarged tonsils or other swollen tissues that cause the problem.
The said steps may be bothersome and pricey for some. But it’s not that big of a price to pay if you really care about your partner. Just think about it, not only can snoring result to more health risks for you, your spouse also suffers from it each night. And if he or she is miserable and stressed out, then don’t expect something nice to come out from your relationship.
